Fulfilling a promise when appointed as Judge, 19th Judicial Circuit in 2016, Judge Charles “Chuck” Smith announces his candidacy for that seat in the primary election March 20, 2018.
Judge Smith is an experienced jurist serving both as a prosecutor in the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and then in private practice. He has more than 40 years of dedicated service to the law profession.
“I believe I have a vast amount of experience and that I can keep giving back to the legal profession if allowed to continue on the bench.”
As an Assistant State’s Attorney in the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, Smith prosecuted the first death penalty case in the county under the revised statute. He was also a prosecutor for 11 different municipalities and City Attorney for North Chicago.
In private practice, Smith’s area of concentration was government law, police and fire pensions, personal injury, civil and criminal litigation. He argued two cases before the Illinois Supreme Court.
Judge Smith was President of the Lake County Bar Association from 1997-98. He was Chairman of the Traffic Laws and Courts Section Council of the Illinois State Bar Association. Smith is past recipient of the Benedict Ori Award recognizing his contribution to law enforcement, the Bar, the Judiciary and the people of Lake County.
Judge Smith is a graduate of St. Louis University School of Law.
Judge Smith is active in his community. He is currently on the Development Board at St. Anastasia and is Waukegan Park District Secretary. He was Park District Patron of the year 2016. He was also honored as Grand Marshall of American Independence Parade in 2016.
Smith and his wife Michele have two grown children. His son Brian has followed his father’s footsteps into law. His daughter Megan, and her husband are both active-duty officers and pilots in the United States Navy.
